Nice weather is finally here and what better time to be outdoors than when the sun is shining, and the temperatures are warm. Spending time outdoors has many benefits for both your mind and your body. Being outside can:
  • Increase opportunities to be physically active. Going for a walk or a run outside doesn’t require a gym membership.
  • Lower cardiovascular risk factors by reducing stress, heart rate, and muscle tension.
  • Improve sleep quality.
  • Improve social connections. Stop and talk to a neighbor when you’re out for a stroll. Meet up with a friend or family member for a bike ride or to walk the dogs.
  • Reduce anxiety and stress. Exposure to sunlight increases serotonin production.
Being outdoors doesn’t mean that you must be in a remote area. A walk in an urban park, time spent strolling on the beach or in your neighborhood can have restorative effects, too. Just remember to protect yourself from the sun — use sunscreen, wear a hat and sunglasses.
