Disability Awareness Month is celebrated every July and this year it marks the 35th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act. According to the Centers for Disease Control, approximately 1 in 4 Americans have some type of disability. That means that many of us either have a disability ourselves or know someone who does. Whether we know someone who is caring for a family member with a disability, or coping with their own chronic or acute disability, it’s a good time to think about how we can be allies. Barriers and stigma still exist but we can work together to change that. “When you judge someone based on a diagnosis, you miss out on their abilities, beauty, and uniqueness.” ― Unknown.
