What is cardiometabolic health? According to Care Access Care Access | What is Cardiometabolic Health?, cardiometabolic health is the relationship between your heart health and how your body breaks down food to create energy. Having less than optimal cardiometabolic health is a risk factor for heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. These conditions are interrelated, meaning that having one of these diagnoses increases your risk for developing another one of these disorders. Diseases like hypertension, obesity, and high cholesterol are risk factors for developing heart disease and diabetes. But many of these disorders are treatable and potentially reversible.
Some factors related to cardiometabolic health are things that we cannot control, such as genetics, age, race/ethnicity, and family history. But there are ways to improve or maintain your cardiometabolic health. Quitting smoking and tobacco use can yield major benefits for your overall health, not just your cardiometabolic health. Achieving and maintaining healthy blood pressure, blood sugar levels, and cholesterol is beneficial for your heart and blood vessels. A healthy diet and regular exercise impact multiple health conditions. For a list of factors and behaviors that influence cardiac disease, see Heart Disease Risk Factors | Heart Disease | CDC
